Glucose ketone index and metabolic health
Hear from the authors of a Frontiers in Science lead article as explore how the GKI—a measure of the ratio of glucose to ketones in the blood—could provide a practical way to assess metabolic state, nutritional ketosis, and adherence to metabolic interventions.
In their lead article, the authors examine links among modifiable lifestyle factors, mitochondrial dysfunction, and chronic diseases—including cancer, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and neurodegenerative disorders.
They outline how the GKI could help track whether diet, fasting, or exercise interventions are shifting the body toward nutritional ketosis—a metabolic state marked by lower glucose and higher ketone availability that may be associated with lower NCD risk or improved disease management.
Join the authors and an expert panel to explore the role of mitochondrial health in chronic disease and to discuss the future of GKI research. This includes the need for larger clinical studies to define disease-specific GKI target ranges, to determine effective levels of adherence, and to understand how dietary interventions can be supported across diverse populations.

Prof Thomas Seyfried
Professor of biology at Boston College
Boston College, USAProf Thomas Seyfried's work advances the mitochondrial metabolic theory of cancer, arguing that tumors arise from damaged cellular respiration rather than genetic mutation alone, and that this reframing opens the door to non-toxic, metabolism-based therapies.
His research spans ketogenic diets, calorie restriction and fasting protocols, and glutamine-targeting drug therapies, applied across glioblastoma, epilepsy and neurodegenerative lipid storage diseases.
Thomas is the author of the book “Cancer as a Metabolic Disease: On the Origin, Management, and Prevention of Cancer” (Wiley, 2012), widely regarded as a landmark contribution to the field.
His contributions have been recognized with the American College of Nutrition Award Lecture and the International Dose Response Society’s Outstanding Career Achievement Award.

Dr Derek Lee
Visiting Scholar in the Department of Biology at Boston College
Boston College, USADr Derek Lee is a cancer metabolism researcher whose work bridges the laboratory and the clinic, translating the science of mitochondrial dysfunction into practical strategies for metabolic health. As Chief Science Officer at MitaRev Health and a Visiting Scholar in the Department of Biology at Boston College, he sits at the intersection of fundamental cancer biology and real-world nutrition-based therapeutics.
His research examines the mitochondrial and metabolic mechanisms underlying cancer, aging and neurodegenerative disease, with a particular focus on how disruptions to cellular respiration and gut-microbiome balance connect to broader patterns of metabolic and bone health.
His published work has explored the emerging links between mitochondrial metabolic theory, aging biology and disease prevention.

Dr Isabella Cooper
Research Fellow Role
University of Westminster, UKDr Isabella Cooper’s research is reframing how chronic disease is understood and managed. A ketogenic metabolic-endocrine therapy specialist, her doctoral work centered on a cross-over clinical trial, investigating how nutritional ketosis versus suppressed ketosis affects the hormonal growth factors linked to cancers such as breast, ovarian and uterine cancer, with a particular focus on women’s health.
Her research explores how insulin over-signalling damages mitochondria, and how restoring metabolic balance through ketones can help prevent or slow ageing and chronic disease.
Isabella founded the Forever Young Group, a collaborative research network spanning pathology, biochemistry, physiology, hepatology, immunology, neurology, nutrition and genetics, built to tackle pressing challenges in chronic disease.
