The past, present and future of personal genomics

Consumer genetic tests are mainstream, genetic modification may soon be, and more and more people have their DNA sequence – or that of a relative – online. Speaking at Science Unlimited 2019, Spencer Wells discussed this new era of personal genomics and the complex issues it raises.

Spencer Wells, Insitome

Spencer Wells is a leading population geneticist. He launched the National Geographic’s Genographic Project, which maps the history of human migration by analyzing the DNA of hundreds of thousands of people around the world. The project helped kick-off the consumer genomics industry – in which Spencer remains active through Insitome, the company he founded to provide genetic tests revealing the story of people’s ancestry. Spencer is also a popular science author and documentary film-maker, as well as Adjunct Professor in the Department of Integrative Biology at the University of Texas at Austin.
