Charting the course for ocean conservation and ecosystem recovery
World-renowned ocean conservationist, Dr Enric Sala, takes you on his transformative journey from academia to activism at this Frontiers Forum virtual event. Discover the wonders of untouched marine ecosystems and learn about his pioneering global conservation efforts.
Drawing from his expeditions, Enric showcases the vibrant, thriving, and harmonious coral reefs and marine life that still exist without human exploitation. Learn how we can keep these ecosystems pristine, view examples of recovering degraded marine ecosystems, and explore new paradigms that could rewrite entire books on oceanography.
Enric spotlights the practical changes we can all make to preserve and protect our oceans, and dispels myths and disinformation surrounding fishing practices. He illustrates how a thriving natural world is essential for our survival and a sustainable future.
National Geographic Explorer in Residence since 2008, Enric Sala is actively transforming the field of marine conservation. Founder of Pristine Seas – a global initiative combining exploration, research, media, economics and policy – he works with local communities, Indigenous Peoples and governments to protect vital places in the ocean – areas known as ‘marine reserves.’ He has been instrumental in creating 29 of the world’s largest marine reserves, covering over 6.8 million square km—an area equivalent to the Amazon region.
An Emmy Award-winning scientist and storyteller, Enric was honored with the prestigious Prince Albert I Grand Medal in 2021 in recognition of his dedication and service to the world’s oceans.
